BARING WITNESS FOR WOMEN VOTERS
On
July 10, 2004, 81 San Francisco Bay Area women spelled the word VOTE
with their nude bodies on Love Field in Point Reyes Station, Northern
California. The event was organized by Baring Witness as part of its
campaign to persuade Americans to register and vote. Baring Witness
especially wants to remind the 22 million single American women who did
not vote in the 2000 election how powerful and how vulnerable their
voting rights are.
National
issues are women’s issues, especially Constitutional rights, the right
to choose birth control methods, and the right to clean air, water, and
food. Basic family needs and entitlements, from education to Social
Security, are in danger of being totally privatized and put out of
reach of many Americans. America is at war with other countries, with
the environment, and with itself. It is time for the unheard to speak
clearly.
“22
million voices would make a huge choir that politicians could not
ignore,” one participant said. “Vote as if your life depends on it!”
