Human sculpture: filming for a music video at
a PeaceJam! conference in Corvallis.
The video got finished and put online
a week ago. We've gotten over 1000 views! We had the PeaceJammers in
their orange shirts make the shape of a heart with wings, the Sufi
symbol for a heart in the spiritual state, as a way of communicating to
the people of Iran. We then made the same outline in luminaria, and
both images were shot from the roof of the OSU Memorial Union.
In late Feb, a staff member of FOR's Iran Project heard one of my songs
and asked me to make a music video of it, which she would
translate into Farsi and spread it around Iran to encourage the
non-violent democracy movement there.
In less than a day, the project had so many people wanting
to help. We filmed much of it at PeaceJam! NW in April. I
had a 16 year old choreographer. Oregon State University videography
students did the filming, and we edited it collaboratively.
I wrote the song "Singing Freedom" 3 years ago, inspired by the
film "Amandla" chronicling the role of music in the South African
non-violent revolution. For the music video, I gathered
photographs of a number of non-violent revolutions, many
successful, and some still in process. Thus it became an
educational project in more ways than one.
May those dedicated to peace and
democracy prevail, everywhere.
